BEDSORES (Pressure Ulcers)

Bedsores can appear as a red or discolored area on your skin, a blister or even an open sore.  They may start when there is constant pressure on your skin that limits blood flow into that area or if your skin is rubbed, dragged or slid against a bed sheet or other surface.

Pressure ulcers may develop rather quickly.  Heels, elbows and tailbones may become red or discolored quite quickly if you are bedbound or chair bound.  However there are ways you can help prevent pressure ulcers if you are at risk.

Few tips to help prevent pressure ulcers:

  • Move your body as often as you can.  Avoid sitting or lying too long on one side of your body.
  • Look at your skin every day and tell someone if you see any redness or discoloration.  Do not rub this area as it may cause more damage.
  • Keep your skin clean, dry and protected.  Moisturize when necessary.
  • Eat healthy food and drink plenty of water to keep your skin healthy and hydrated.
  • Use lifting or transferring devices such as a transfer board or trapeze bar if required to avoid rubbing your skin against your bed, chair or sheet.
  • Use a skin barrier cream and an incontinence pad to protect your skin if you have difficulties with your bowel or bladder function.
  • Ask your doctor or health professional team to assess your risk of pressure ulcers and ask them to help you design a prevention program that suits your particular needs.
